Feeling disheartened: Racism in the Workplace

Hey guys,  So this happened last summer and I originally did not want to talk about this because it's in the past, but I think it's important to realize how normalized racism in the workplace is.  Last summer, I worked at a small sushi restaurant in town. If you're from La Crescenta, you probably know the place. Super small, has weird soy sauce. I wanted a summer job to earn some extra cash. It was my second day on the job and I was nervous but excited. I was finally working!  Near the end of my shift, two women came into the store. They were noticeably Korean and when I heard them speaking in Korean, I thought I might as well assist them in their language as I was fluent. They seemed to appreciate the help and I was helping them with their order when a woman in the restaurant said loudly that our 'Ching chong' language was bothering her. She said something along the lines of how our language made her lose her appetite and how this is America and we should be speak...

What are workplace unions?

Hello everyone!  Today we're going to be talking about labor unions.  Alright, so I'm sure you've heard the term labor unions a lot recently. I know I have. But what are they exactly? So in short, workers can unionize and demand more rights from their employees. This evidently sounds like a good thing. If so, why is there so much fuss about it? Well, employers don't want you to unionize for obvious reasons. Most employers are content with the status quo; it benefits them. Now, while I'm ...

Gender Inequality in the Workforce

Hello everyone,  I'm Audrey, the founder of this club. ASB approval for this club was difficult as most teachers have signed on supervising role for other clubs, but regardless I want to have this platform to talk about labor rights with you all. I have talked to some of you in person and your experiences in the workplace and am super happy that you find this to be a notable cause. The Labor Rights Equals Civil Rights club still stands! I will keep working on getting this club formally approved.  On that note, let's talk about gender inequality in the workforce, a not so happy topic unfortunately.  So workplace discrimination exists. I'm sure all of you know that already. You hear feminists on the news ranting about how gender inequality is evident in the status quo. Is it really, though?  Shouldn't something like gender discrimination be illegal by now?  The answer is...yes, gender discrimination in the workplace ubiquitously exists. The answer to the sec...

About the club

Hey guys!  This is the official website for the Civil Rights Equals Labor Rights club! This is simply the place to talk about any issues concerning your rights in the workplace, your right to form a union, etc! We want to discuss the different inequities that we face as workers and navigate solutions to the problems we see in our everyday life. We believe that your rights in the workplace are your civil rights. We all deserve to work in an environment that treats us fairly, regardless of our gender, sex, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, etc. If you share these values, this club might be the place for you.  As of right now, we need more members! this is a very small club and is fairly new, so if you know anybody who is interested, please let us know. We will email anyone who reaches out to us with meeting plans and fundraising activities.  Thank you!
